More About WHAG

WHAG began life as Rochdale Women’s Housing Aid Group in 1981.  Their aim was to provide affordable supported accommodation to homeless women aged 16-65. At the time, there was no housing for homeless and vulnerable women in Rochdale, with homeless accommodation only available for single men, or women who were victims of domestic abuse. Rose Sumner, WHAG’s founder, set up a hostel on the Cloverhall Estate which offered shared accommodation for homeless women.

In 1996, working in partnership with St Vincent’s Housing Association and Rochdale Council, WHAG moved to Rose Court in Castleton. This meant they could provide 16 flats for vulnerable homeless women. They are all self-contained one bedroom flats, with their own kitchens and bathrooms. One flat also has extra adaptations so it is more suitable for disabled people. There are also support workers who support clients to develop the skills and resources to find and keep tenancies when they leave the project.

EMPOWERMENT – CHOICE – STRENGTH – CHANGE

WHAG also began to look at wider opportunities to support people in their communities. This led to them offering outreach and floating support services, and bidding successfully to run domestic abuse services in Rochdale, Bury and Cheshire West and Chester. Over the years, they have offered a range of projects including specialist services for black and minority ethnic clients, support for men who are victims of domestic abuse, training and workshops, and refuge services.

Welcome to WHAG's item donation shop! Here you can browse and purchase the items that WHAG need this month. We then make sure your donation is delivered directly to their door.

Christmas can be a lonely time of year for some of our clients as some have very little or no family, so it is up to us to make is special for them. I am guessing this year it will also be hard for the ones that do have family members because of restrictions due to Covid-19. Each year at Christmas we try to do what we can and provide our clients with as much as we can, including food, activities etc. We rely on donations for our ladies, this includes scarves, gloves, socks, chocolates and essential items. I am unsure if this is going to happen this year as normally by now I would have received communication from the donating parties but not yet had any communication. I am guessing things may be a little tight this year as companies/organisations/businesses have been kindly donating to charities throughout this pandemic, which is also wonderful.

WHAG always ensure our clients get a small gift each at Christmas, but anything extra from the kind people who donate to charities would be amazing. Let’s make this Christmas no different than any other!! None of us know when we will be in a situation where we one day may need the support these ladies are currently receiving.
