More About HOPE

At the start of 1994, Leeds Social Services made Community Care Grants available for Voluntary Organisations to employ a Project Worker for older people. The purpose of the scheme was to set up services such as gardening, decorating, support to carers and to relieve social isolation. Halton Moor and Osmondthorpe Project for Elders was established in September 1994, and on the 1st April 2003, they became a registered charity, charity number 1096626. Since opening thier doors in 1994, they have continued to develop their services in line with service user’s consultation and need.

HOPE support and enable all people aged 60+ and carers to live as independently for as long as possible in their own homes and community, and arrange, weekly activities, day trips and group holidays! As well as form filling/letter writing, advocacy, benefit advice, and activities to develop skills and reduce isolation, they work in partnership with local schools to provide intergenerational sessions.

Aims

  • To research the needs of older people who live within the project boundaries, and to develop appropriate services to respond to these needs.

  • To initiate practical, locally based schemes, and to provide information and advice for older people where necessary.

  • In addition to working with groups, to recognise the needs of the individual in the community.

  • To work with both the statutory sector and other voluntary agencies to meet the needs of older people in the area.

  • To campaign on issues relevant to older people’s lives.

  • To constantly monitor and evaluate our work so that we provide a quality service.

  • To actively involve older people in decision making processes of the project.

  • To keep in close contact with the community and recognise the value of our service user’s experiences.

  • To provide appropriate opportunities for volunteers/students through the work of the project.

  • To ensure that all volunteers/students have access to appropriate support, training and encouragement for their development.
