The first Emmaus opened in 1992 and there are now 29 communities, which is what they call their residential sites, spread across the UK. There are also five Emmaus groups currently working to open new communities. Emmaus UK federation supports more than 800 formerly homeless people. They provide them with support, a home for as long as they need it and meaningful work and training in our social enterprises. They hope to increase our capacity to 1,000 rooms by 2020.
Emmaus Merseyside is an independent charity and a member of the Emmaus UK federation. It began in 2002 when Margaret Riley brought together a group of people to talk about setting up an Emmaus community in Merseyside. This led to the formation of the homeless charity in 2004.
Emmaus Merseyside is a charity that provides a home, as well as education, training and work to people who have experienced homelessness.
They have a purpose built community building in Seaforth that is home to the people they support, known as companions. Their community building provides a home for up to 28 people. Each person who joins has their own room, as well as access to communal dining, catering, exercise and training facilities. Everyone living in the Emmaus community works in our social enterprise, at one of the three charity stores across Merseyside. All of the money generated from the social enterprises is then re-invested to support the formerly homeless people living at the community building.
