Cathedral Archer Project (CAP) help homeless and vulnerable adults from sleeping bag to employment and fulfilling and enjoyable lives. They believe that every person who comes through their doors is an individual with talents, the ability to live a healthy, sustainable life, and who, in time and with support, will have aspirations they want to achieve. In CAP's experience, supported by research, through building positive relationships, you can help people change their lives for the better.
They do this through dividing their work into three streams: engagement, stabilisation and fulfilment.
Engagement involves working with rough sleepers and those who live more chaotic lifestyles. CAP work on building relationships and trust with these individuals so that we can help them begin to develop some form of routine. Their work at this stage is also focused on providing the basic necessities such as breakfast, lunch and food parcels, access to showers and laundry facilities and medical facilities.
One of Cathedral Archer Project's central aims is to help people build stability into their lives. This may be through helping them into accommodation, helping them secure benefits, or through volunteering and/or activity programmes. Everyone who uses the centre is given the opportunity to become a partner volunteer. Partner volunteers help with work. The kitchen for example, apart from the chef, is primarily run by partners. Both the volunteering and activity programmes are aimed at helping build people’s self-confidence and self-worth to help people see that they are important and can achieve.
The final element of CAP's work is called fulfilment as it focuses on how people can create a stable and fulfilling life. Their social enterprise, Just Works, has been around for just over 3 years and in that time has employed around 30 people. These individuals are employed by Just Works to fulfil cleaning and catering contracts and also work on their screen printing business Printed By us. Although Just Works is about providing employment for people who have been homeless it is also about helping people to overcome the trauma in their lives. As a result there is a full well-being programme which participants take part in, which includes walks, yoga, meditation, attendance at management meetings, games, camping in the Peak District in the Summer, and many other activities.
Alongside this Cathedral Archer Project also work with a number of agencies in Sheffield to ensure that those individuals who use the Archer Project receive the support they need to build a stable and fulfilling life.
During Covid-19, work has changed and adapted to be a multi-agency response in order to ensure that as many people as possible had somewhere to stay, had food and had the support they needed.
